The announcement for Disney’s Moana 2 came as a surprise to many as the studio has garnered more news about a Moana live action remake than an animated sequel. What was originally began as a television series for Disney+ in 2020 is now getting its now highly anticipated theatrical release in 2024.
Bob Iger made the announcement in February 2024 sharing some details and a teaser for the film.
Disney has stated the premise as, “after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Moana 2 Release Date
The release date for Disney’s Moana 2 is November 27, 2024. Many other animated Disney movies have been released around the same time of year, including Wish, Frozen, and the first animated Moana film.
Moana 2 Cast and Crew
Moana 2 will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. This marks his first time directing a feature length film. Jennifer Lee, well-known for her work on Frozen and Frozen II, will serve as producer alongside Osnat Shurer, who served in the role on the first Moana film.
Music will be by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who will replace Lin-Manuel Miranda. Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, who scored the first film, are set to return for the sequel.
Moana
While Auliʻi Cravalho has stated she will not be in the live action Moana film, it’s likely we can expect her to reprise her role in Moana 2.
Maui
Dwayne Johnson has plans to play Maui in the live action remake, so it’s expected he will return for the animated sequel as well.
Wayfinding Ancestors
We know some of the new characters we’ll be introduced to in the new movie are Moana’s ancestors. However, further details about the characters and actors has yet to be released.
