Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid takes a fresh look at Ariel’s sisters, giving them new names and more backstory. The names of Ariel’s sisters in the live action film are Mala, Indira, Caspia, Tamika, Karina, and Perla. Each sister rules over one of the Seven Seas, adding a new layer to the film.

The actresses portraying Ariel’s sisters have been carefully selected to embody the essence of the mermaids and seas they represent. With a diverse and talented cast, viewers can expect a new perspective on Ariel’s family in their fantastical kingdom under the sea.

Let’s take a closer look at each sister from the live action remake.

Mala

Karolina Conchet as Ariel’s sister Mala from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Mala, ruler of the Chaine Sea, is known for her fearlessness. She’s very connected to her home and cares for it by protecting coral reefs. She hates the pollution shipwrecks cause to the ocean. This has given her an unfavorable view of humans. She’s well-regarded among her peers as a strong leader.

In the Chaine Sea, gratitude is shown through bubble blowing, and backflips are compliments—which isn’t surprising given the mermaids of this region excel at acrobatics. They wear coral jewelry and perform opera during holidays and get revitalized during the Salmon Sun and Sponge Moon festivals. Mind their customs, as pointing at fins is impolite, or you may not be invited to join in their next celebratory meal of fresh clams.

Animated Counterpart: Attina
Personality Traits: fearless, protective
Sea: Chaine Sea
Played by: Karolina Conchet

Indira

Simone Ashley as Ariel’s sister Indira from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Indira, ruler of the Brinedive Sea, leads with integrity and generosity. She stays in-the-know on what’s happening in her kingdom and is excellent at debate.

The shallow waters of the Brinedive Sea is used to the mermaids’ advantage in this region. They stir up sand from the ocean floor, making underwater dust clouds that they use as protection against predators like reef sharks and barracudas. Not all underwater creatures are their foe, for they love to sing whale songs on holidays. If they’re lucky, a whale just might return the favor.

Animated Counterpart: Alana
Personality Traits: diplomatic, empathetic
Sea: Brinedive Sea
Played by: Simone Ashley

Caspia

Nathalie Sorrell as Ariel’s sister Caspia from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Caspia, ruler of the Apneic Sea, is very protective of the coral that thrives in her kingdom. She is not as adventurous as some of her other sisters and prefers to stay close to home, only traveling for necessary meetings.

In the Apneic Sea, you’ll find some of the most superstitious mermaids in the Seven Seas. They don’t turn their back to another, they use good luck tokens to invite marriage, and they even renew their dreams of success on the first day of Summer by rubbing mud on their fins. It isn’t all juju and “knocks on wood” though. These sensitive merfolk are also known to sing to their little ones to sleep in their seashell beds.

Animated Counterpart: Adella
Personality Traits: selfless, somewhat reclusive
Sea: Apneic Sea
Played by: Nathalie Sorrell

Tamika

Sienna King as Ariel’s sister Tamika from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Tamika, ruler of the Fracus Sea, is powerful and dominant. She rules boldly and has been rumored to have once wrestled a tiger shark into submission.

The Fracus Sea is full of color and vibrancy with its beautiful coral and tropical fish. The mermaids of this region highly value the act of gift-giving, with it being considered appropriate to refuse a gift nine times before finally accepting it. There modesty doesn’t stop there, as they are known to receive their compliments graciously.

Animated Counterpart: Aquata
Personality Traits: strong, confident, tactical
Sea: Fracus Sea
Played by: Sienna King

Karina

Kajsa Mohammar as Ariel’s sister Karina from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Karina, ruler of the Saithe Sea, is a great protector of the seals that swim in her native waters. She does not waver in her decisions and tends too be more reclusive than her sisters.

The Saithe Sea is a location where, despite its icy weather, has a history of humans and mermaids having contact. The mermaids used to poke their heads through holes in the ice to speak to people on land. They’re a superstitious bunch as well, hoping to get good luck from a sea angel landing in their hand. Inhabitants consider whistling rude and they celebrate the Slug Sun Festival.

Animated Counterpart: Arista
Personality Traits: intuitive, protective of animals
Sea: Saithe Sea
Played by: Kajsa Mohammar

Perla

Lorena Andrea as Ariel’s sister Perla from Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid.

Perla, ruler of the Piton Sea, exudes warmth and kindness. Her charisma has even faired others well as it’s been said she was able to save a group of penguins from an orca pod. She makes decisions in her kingdom with great thought and care, often opting to put decisions to a vote.

In the Piton Sea, mermaids stay active with sport and ritual. They love riding elephant seals, playing hide-and-seek, and playing a game through hoops during Clam Moon. They aren’t just athletes, but artists too, as they highly value the ability to play music.

Animated Counterpart: Andrina
Personality Traits: charming, persuasive
Sea: Piton Sea
Played by: Lorena Andrea
